At 2:00 PM on Halloween, October 31, the San Diego City Council will vote on a measure to remove future funding from local Recreation Councils, and transfer existing funds to a City account managed by newly hired Park and Recreation staff members. The cost for the new staff is estimated at nearly $500,000.
Local Recreation Councils have managed these funds for 30 years, at no cost to taxpayers. Processes and procedures for approval of expenses and disbursement of these funds has not yet been announced by the Park and Recreation Department.
Councilmember Chris Cate is hosting a press conference at 1:00 PM tomorrow expressing his support of local Recreation Councils.
